African American Scholarships in 2021

Scholarships are designed to make higher education affordable for students from various environments. There are numerous possibilities for those from underrepresented minorities. Check out programs that are available for African Americans in the current study year.

Dr. Barbara Odom-Wesley Spirit of Achievement Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: 2/14/2021
  • Amount: $3,000

Candidates have to be African-American female high school senior currently attending classes in trade, technical, or cosmetology school in the Tarrant County area. Every applicant must have a minimum of 2.5 GPA. This scholarship can be used at any two-year or four-year college or university.

Dr. Gussie M. Ware Memorial Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: 2/1/2021
  • Amount: Varies

Candidates have to be African-American females, graduating high school seniors or GED recipients who have been accepted into a two- or four-year college or university, or past Dr. Gussie M. Ware Memorial Scholarship recipients who are currently enrolled in college, and a 2.5 GPA. Also, applicants must have a permanent address in Winnebago County or be a relative of Dr. Gussie M. Ware.

Dr. Wynetta A. Frazier “Sister to Sister Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: 3/1/2021
  • Amount: $500

This program was designed to provide financial help to mature African American women in their pursuit of post-secondary education. Candidates have to be returning students whose education was interrupted by family responsibilities or other personal demands and are now ready to complete college, or who are entering college for the first time because of these factors. Every applicant must be not less than 21 years of age.

EPP Undergraduate Scholarship Program

  • Application Deadline: 1/31/2021
  • Amount: $45,000

This program targets students who have completed their sophomore year, attending minority-serving institutions, and have recently declared or about to declare a major in atmospheric, oceanic, or environmental disciplines that support these sciences. Applicants must be US citizens currently enrolled or accepted as full-time, second-year students in a four-year academic program or third-year students in a five-year program in a discipline related to NOAA’s programs and mission at an accredited minority-serving institution. A minimum of 3.2 GPA is required.

Era L. And Frances L. Walker Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: 2/1/2021
  • Amount: Varies

This program aims to provide educational resources for African-American males to pursue higher education. A candidate must be a graduating senior from a Rockford public high school with a minimum of 2.9 GPA. An applicant needs to have been involved in community service and volunteerism and share Era’s values.

Fontana Transport Inc. Scholars Program

  • Application Deadline: 3/13/2021
  • Amount: $5,000

This program is created for underrepresented, low-income, and first-generation college-bound students. Each candidate for this scholarship has to be pursuing an undergraduate degree full-time in transportation, math, science, engineering, architecture, environmental design, PreMed, psychology, Spanish language/literature. Candidates do not have to necessarily be US citizens but must have a minimum of 3.5 GPA and proof of attending college beginning in the fall semester.

FTE Fellowships for Doctoral Students of African Descent

  • Application Deadline: 2/1/2021
  • Amount: Varies

This program provides financial help for doctoral students who have completed the coursework stage of their Ph.D. or Th.D. program in religion, theological studies or biblical studies. Candidates have to be of African descent enrolled or admitted full time in a Th.D. or Ph.D. program in religion, theological studies, or biblical studies and be finished with coursework by the beginning of the fellowship year. Candidates at the dissertation stage have to be in a position to write full time during the fellowship year.

George A. Strait Minority Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: 4/1/2021
  • Amount: Varies

This scholarship is awarded to college graduates with significant law library experience who are members of a minority group as defined by current US government guidelines, are degree candidates in an accredited library or law school, and who intend to have a career in law librarianship. Evidence of financial need is required.

George Scott Jr. Memorial Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: 5/15/2021
  • Amount: Varies

The program is designed for students to attend Texas Tech University. Preference is given to academically-motivated African American students from Lubbock, Texas, who will be attending Texas Tech University.

Girls Who Illustrate Awesomeness Scholarships

  • Application Deadline: 12/1/2021
  • Amount: $750

It is a chance for young women or gender no-confirming individuals of color who are actively working to change the world. A candidate has to be a young woman of color who is currently enrolled in college/university or will begin college/university in the spring semester and has a minimum of 3.0 GPA. A 500-word essay or 5-minute video is required. The topic is, “Who are you, and how are you going to change the world?”

GRCF Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids Minority Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: 3/1/2021
  • Amount: Varies

The program is created for students of color attending a non-profit public or private college/university majoring in fine arts, including all visual and performing arts. The candidate must be a Kent County resident, have a minimum of 2.5 GPA, and have financial need.

GRCF Hackett Family Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: 3/1/2021
  • Amount: Varies

Candidates have to be seniors at or have graduated from any Grand Rapids public high school in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and will be an undergraduate student attending an accredited college/university or skilled trade school of their choice. Preference is given to women of color.

GRCF Warner Norcross & Judd Law School Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: 3/1/2021
  • Amount: $5,000

This program is created for students of color pursuing a law degree at any accredited law school in the USA. The candidates have to be current or former residents of Michigan if they are not currently attending a school in Michigan.

GRCF Warner Norcross & Judd Paralegal and Legal Secretarial Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: 4/1/2021
  • Amount: Varies
