During 1950’s Elvis was in an army, Eisenhower was in the White House… and me…Well, I was 16 years at that time. One day in 1958 my father told me that we were going to buy a car for me. I can’t explain the feeling that hit me all of the sudden. It was joy, excitement, concern and fear at the same time. Finally, my dream came true, I couldn’t believe it till the moment when we got to the dealership. There were many men walking from one car to another, I tried to represent myself as an experience driver by looking under the hoods of Chevys, Plymouths and Fords, without having any ideas of what I was doing.

I didn’t want it to end, all those car, they just embraced me and I felt the feeling of my future fantastic driving experience. After about an hour my father has chosen a two-door, three-tone blue Ford.

Three years this car served me as a loyal friend. But, can you imagine how big was my excitement when I managed to earned enough money to buy my own, my very own car? Being 16-years old boy I started driving company newspaper trucks. What would lawyers say about it nowadays, that’s funny, isn’t it?

Now, I would like to tell about my first car in detail. I remember that day as it was yesterday, I bought a 1955 Buick Special blue and white two-door with a thundering V-8 engine. The general sum of money I paid was 800$ for the car.

Every used car in 1950’s had some idiosyncrasies. My Buick Special wasn’t an exception. There weren’t a lot of devices, the radio was dead and only tiny speaker in the middle of a dashboard reminded of itself.

The truth is I loved that car. I loved that car, despite of the fact that all dash lights went out, I had my own first car. It could take me anywhere I wanted, my own set of wheels.

Honestly, I didn’t see the 1955 Buick on the road these days, but, for those who admire retro cars as I do, these things will always be something legendary. And, I still can start the engine and feel the spirit of 1950’s in my mind.

I want to thank Detroit for creating the 1955 Buick Special blue and white two-door. This car is not just a simple vehicle it became a time machine for old man like me. I bet there are plenty of the same admires, and in 100 years there will be drivers like us who never forget the first drive on their first car.

I guess that Elvis Presley’s quote reflects that feeling of buying first car:

The first car I bought was the most beautiful car I’ve ever seen. It was secondhand, but I parked it outside of my hotel the day I got it. I sat up all night, just lookin’ at it.
